11th Annual Fundraiser Sets Record
FRANKLIN PIERCE Law Center’s 11th Annual Public Interest Coalition (PIC) Auction was a great success, breaking all prior auction records by raising a grand total of $42,500. Auction proceeds will be used to fund summer fellowships for selected Pierce Law students interning with public interest organizations in New Hampshire and throughout the world.
The auction, held March 28, 2003 at the Courtyard Marriott Grappone Conference Center in Concord, featured a silent auction, accompanied by music from the Hopkinton High School Jazz Band, followed by a spirited and competitive live auction. Some of this year’s auction items included a week on Cape Cod, a weekend at Killington ski resort, skydiving, handmade quilts, restaurant gift certificates and original artwork. The two items inspiring the highest and most competitive bidding of the evening were a parking space – purchased by a law students for Pierce Law’s beloved receptionist, Jan Neuman – and a date with Pierce Law alum Mark Howard.
Led by the auction’s honorary Bar chair, NH Bar Association President-Elect Russell F. Hilliard, and student co-chairs Heather Logan ‘04, Mia Poliquin ‘04 and Emilie Roth ‘04, the event raised a record amount to fund important public interest work. The PierceLaw community thanks the seventeen law firms and organizations who sponsored auction tables and extends special thanks to the Nashua Bar Association and to Sulloway & Hollis for each sponsoring one-half fellowships, and to Lexis Law Publishing for again funding a full fellowship.
Twenty-three Pierce Law students have applied for 2003 Public Interest Fellowships. With the money raised to date, fourteen full fellowships can be awarded to selected students this summer. Some of the organizations that 2003 fellowship applicants propose to serve include NH Legal Assistance; NH Disabilities Rights Center; the NH Public Defender Program; The Center for Democracy and Technology; Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts; the UN War Crimes Tribunal for Rwanda; the NH Commission for Human Rights; the NH Coalition against Domestic and Sexual Violence; a variety of NH county attorney’s offices; the United States Attorney’s Office; and the NH Attorney General’s Office’s Consumer Protection, Criminal and Environmental Bureaus.
It is not too late to support the 2003 Public Interest Fellowship Program. If you wish to donate, please contact Brigette Siff Holmes at bholmes@piercelaw.edu.
