Tackling Underage Drinking Problems

“Underage drinking doesn’t just impact the youths who take a drink, or their families, or even their schools.  It affects all of us,” said Dr. Susan Lynch, First Lady of New Hampshire, speaking at the “New Futures” event on Sept. 23 at the Historical Society in Concord.  The event celebrated the release of a new state “road map” (Recommendations for Success: New Hampshire’s Strategy to Reduce Underage Alcohol Problems) tackling underage alcohol use. The nearly 50-page report is designed to guide communities as they work together to reduce this major public health and safety problem.

Family Division Administrative Judge Edwin Kelly, Health and Human Services Commissioner John Stephen, Attorney General Kelly Ayotte were among the speakers, along with Kaitlyn Reilly, a senior at St. Thomas Aquinas High School who was recently involved in the push to pass the new party host liability law.

Three community leaders received awards for their work in helping to prevent and treat underage drinking: Alan Robichaud of Belmont; Tim Lena from Plaistow; and Jacqui Abikoff, Gilford.
