How to be an effective and responsible volunteer or board member of a non-profit was the focus of a Nov. 30 workshop for the NHBA Leadership Academy.
Academy participants heard from a first-rate panel of experts on NH non-profits: Mary Ellen Jackson, executive director of the NH Center for Non-profits; Mary Susan Leahy, an attorney at McLane, Graf, Raulerson & Middleton and leader or board member of many organizations; and Michael Delucia, who recently stepped down as senior assistant attorney general and director of Charitable Trusts of the Department of Justice, who has lectured nationally on regulation of charitable organizations.
The panelists provided insights into the responsibilities of serving on a board, the typical life cycle of a non-profit, and how to select what non-profit organizations will be the right fit for an attorney-volunteer.
This month’s Academy workshop focuses on the judiciary. As advance "homework," each participant will "shadow" a trial court judge for a day. Upcoming sessions will look at media relations and social media; the legislature; the executive branch; and the business sector.
