Bored? Have a spare half hour? The NH Free Legal Answers website administered by the Pro Bono Referral System may offer just the distraction needed during this time of physical distancing.

Free Legal Answers provides NH attorneys with the opportunity to help low- to moderate-income people with critical legal advice on civil legal matters from the comfort of their couch. All that is needed is a computer or mobile device and an internet connection to participate.

“We are seeing an uptick in questions, particularly around housing and parenting and Covid-19,” said Pro Bono Director Virginia Martin. “In the weeks ahead we expect these inquiries to continue to increase and could use more volunteers to help.”

To qualify to post questions, members of the public must first create an account and complete a financial questionnaire to determine eligibility. The Pro Bono Board recently raised the income guidelines on a temporary basis in light of the economic disruption caused by Covid-19.

Attorneys can sign up by going to and clicking on “Volunteer Attorney Registration” found in the top ribbon. Once registered, it is strictly up to the volunteer as to which questions to answer and there is no expectation of further legal services beyond responding to selected queries.  By signing up for specific legal subjects, volunteers will receive emails when new questions are posted in their selected areas, which precludes the need to keeping logging in to check the question queue.
