Teacher Professional Development Opportunity: James Madison Legacy Project

The James Madison Legacy Project (JMLP) professional development opportunity will provide for 25 teachers from the New Hampshire to participate in a high quality civic education professional development. The JMLP is now conducting the fourth year of the program. It is called Cohort 4.

Recruitment of high school and middle school teachers (Grades 7-12) and teachers of Special Populations in those grade levels for Cohort 4 who will be able to teach civic education during the 2018/19 academic year.

Cohort 4:The program will be held at Suffolk University in Boston. The entire event will begin the afternoon of July 29, 2018 through August 2, 2018. There will be 36 hours of professional development. As part of the training, you will be taught by teacher practitioners, hear from very qualified guest speakers, and receive excellent resources. The resources will include lessons, videos and supplemental materials. Please consider the benefits and responsibilities of Cohort 4.

Participants will receive the following benefits:

  • High quality professional development at no cost
  • stipend of $400.00 for the entire program
  • A classroom set of We the People: the Citizen and the Constitution texts
  • Free  access to theWe the People E-Text
  • Very usable classroom resources to include: texts, lessons, access to videos
  • Any transportation costs associated with program activities will be reimbursed
  • Free food and lodging at Suffolk University
  • Access to graduate credit at a very reasonable cost ($75.00/credit from Framingham University)
  • Guidance of a JMLP Mentor

Participant responsibilities will be:

  • Attend and participate in all training sessions
  • Teach the We the People Program
  • Conduct a culminating Mock Congressional hearing with your students. (This will be addressed during the training)

Application Selection: There will be a panel made up of New England We the People State Coordinators who will review applications. Among the guidelines for acceptance are:

  • be a High School or Middle School teacher
  • have the ability to implement the JMLP design
  •  be a teacher from a high needs school/district or a teacher of Special populations
  • proportion applicants geographically
  • have the ability to use the We the People texts

Time lines: Applications will close on May 1 and teachers will be notified by May 8.
