Support Staff Salary Ranges by Years of Experience

These charts show the percentage of firms reporting compensation for secretaries and paralegals by pay ranges for each level of experience.

More than half of legal secretaries without experience earned less than $25,000 per year. For those with three to four years of experience, 20 percent (the highest percentage in this category) earned between $36,000 and $40,000 per year. Twenty-nine percent of legal secretaries with 10 or more years of experience earned between $41,000 and $50,000. Twenty-three percent earned more than $50,000.

Among paralegal jobs, 45 percent of entry-level positions paid less than $30,000 per year. About half of paralegals with three to five years of experience earned $21,000 to $35,000 per year. Among more experienced paralegals - those with five years to 10 years of experience - 34 percent earned $36,000 to $50,000 per year; 20 percent earned more than that. About 35 percent of paralegals with more than 10 years of experience earned between $51,000 and $60,000, 16.5 percent earned more than $60,000.
