Justice Hicks Named a Trustee of American Inns of Court

Supreme Court Justice Gary E. Hicks

New Hampshire Supreme Court Justice Gary E. Hicks has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the American Inns of Court, a nationwide organization of judges, lawyers and law students who meet regularly in small groups around the country, for discussion and programs designed to enhance professionalism, ethics, and legal skills.

"The Inns of Court are an invaluable forum for the sharing of experiences and ideas, all designed to improve the practice of law," Justice Hicks said. More than 25,000 judges, attorneys, legal scholars and students are involved in the organization nationwide.

The Inns of Court, initiated 29 years ago with the encouragement of then U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, focus on promoting dialogue among judges and lawyers at all levels of the profession, from experts to first year law students. Justice Hicks joined New Hampshire’s Webster-Batchelder Inn of Court seven years ago, when he was a judge on the Superior Court.

"The Inn is the only forum available for informal exchange between the bench and the bar," Justice Hicks said. The Webster-Batchelder Inn, named for lawyer and statesman Daniel Webster of New Hampshire and for retired Supreme Court Justice William A. Batchelder, includes members from Hillsborough and Merrimack Counties. A second Inn, serving members in the Seacoast New Hampshire area, is named for Charles C. Doe of Rollinsford, who served as Chief Justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court in the late 1800s

A native of New Hampshire’s North Country, Justice Hicks practiced for 23 years at the law firm of Wiggin & Nourie in Manchester before he was appointed to the Superior Court in 2001 by then Gov. Jeanne Shaheen. A graduate of Bucknell University (1975) and Boston University Law School (1978), Justice Hicks was appointed to the state Supreme Court in 2006 by Gov. John Lynch following the retirement of Senior Associate Justice Joseph P. Nadeau.

Justice Hicks will serve a four-year term as a trustee of the American Inns of Court beginning with the October board meeting in Washington DC. That meeting will include the "American Inns of Court Celebration of Excellence" hosted by Associate Justice Samuel A. Alito of the United States Supreme Court.
