Bar News - June 12, 2009

2009-2010 NHBA Budget Approved

At its May 12 meeting, the NHBA Board of Governors approved a slightly smaller but balanced budget for the new Bar Association fiscal year that started June 1, 2009. Spending and revenue are down two percent overall.

Recession-related declines in advertising and a steep drop in IOLTA grant funding were only a few of the challenges surmounted in the latest budget, which preserved the core of the Bar’s member services and public services programming.

Association dues for active members increased by $5 (implementing year 4 of a five-year funding plan for the increased member space at the Bar Center); overall there is a decrease of $5 in mandatory costs to practice as the Court has suspended the $10 NHMCLE filing fee for the new year and held other fees steady.

More details on the newly adopted budget will be available at the budget discussion session to be scheduled later this summer. Or visit the NHBA Board of Governors page in the For Members area of the Bar website.

In other actions, the Board:
  • Approved the NH Public Defender Program for its contract renewal for indigent criminal defense representation with the state. Upon the motion of at-large Governor Alexander Walker, the Board revised the resolution to add that "Whereas…the New Hampshire Public Defender Program is recognized as one of the finest public defender programs in the nation." The NHBA’s approval is required by statute; the NHPD provides representation under contract to the NH Judicial Council.
  • Received an update on the work of a "Transitions Back to Practice" task force which has been considering what services to provide to attorneys who have been inactive and are returning to practice. The Bar Association is continuing its investigation of the appropriate services to provide by inviting a number of attorneys to an informal focus group following a replay of one of the ABA’s Recession Recovery telephone seminars to be held in mid-June.

The next BOG meeting, the last to be presided over by outgoing President Ellen L. Arnold, will take place in conjunction with the 2009 NHBA Annual Meeting on Friday, June 26 at 3 p.m. at the Mount Washington Resort, Bretton Woods.

If you are in doubt about the status of any meeting, please call the Bar Center at 603-224-6942 before you head out.
