Giving Back: Bar News Survey Reflects Spirit of Community Service

The NH Bar News recently conducted an on-line survey asking for information on "giving back" activities performed by New Hampshire’s legal community. Most of those replying spent more than 10 hours a month in legal and community volunteering, with about 50 percent holding leadership roles. Bar News recognizes that the following is just a very small sample of the volunteer work performed by NHBA attorneys and judges.

Hillsborough County
Ross McLeod, Hillsborough County Attorney’s office, serves on the Board of Selectmen in Windham, is president of the Windham Soccer Association and an eighth grade soccer referee. He is also liaison to the Windham Recreation Committee, coach of the Derryfield School mock trial team and a judge for "We the People."
Strafford County
Chris Roundy of Dover is vice president of the board of Community Partners, which provides local mental health and developmental services and a family support center to the Seacoast region. He has done a bike-a-thon for Muscular Dystrophy and is involved in the Red’s Road Race, which supports many non-profits in Strafford County.

Belknap County
Peter Millham, Wescott, Dyer, Fitzgerald & Nichols in Laconia, served as the town moderator of Gilford for 39 years, conducting town meetings and overseeing elections. He was an original member of the Lakes Region Charitable Foundation, serving a term as chair; he has also served as chair of the Lakes Region General Hospital board.

Carroll County
Paul Chant (Cooper, Cargill, Chant, No. Conway) serves on the boards of the Mount Washington Valley Economic Council, the Ham Arena, the Mount Washington Valley School to Career Partnership, the Kennett High School Student Improvement Task Force and as Moderator for the Tamworth School District.

Many of the leaders of the Boy Scouts of America in NH, from Council President Hon. Gerard Boyle (Concord District Court Judge), to Vice President Jim Steiner (Concord), to Vice President Craig Donais (Manchester), are NH Bar members. They support a scouting program administered to some 13,000 youth in New Hampshire. Many other attorneys serve more locally in the Scouts, such as Heidi Barrett-Kitchen (Shaheen & Gordon, Concord). Also, very involved in Girl Scouts of America is Associate Attorney General Anne Edwards.
Cheshire County
Cheshire County Prosecutor D. Chris McLaughlin has coached youth hockey for many years, recently founding The Rapids, a tri-state tournament team for boys. He is in the process of creating a tri-state girls’ team, also. Chris was a championship player himself at Dartmouth and has served as director of the Brattleboro Hockey Association.

Merrimack County
Denis Maloney (Gallagher, Callahan & Gartrell, Concord) spends a great deal of time volunteering for United Way, the SPCA, Second Start, the NH Community Loan Fund and New Hampshire’s community colleges. He also devotes personal time to manning food banks, "toiling in the vineyards," so to speak.

Hillsborough County
Jennifer Turco Beaudet (Wiggin & Nourie, Manchester) leads a local affiliate of the Young Survival Coalition, a national non-profit that is dedicated to the unique issues of women diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 40. She provides resources, support, and outreach to women in the area and the people who serve them. Jennifer herself was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 27.

Belknap County
Lynne Sabean, a civil litigation associate at Boutin & Altieri in Meredith, has been volunteering regularly at the NH State Prison for Men since law school. Lynne is part of a Buddhist group that instructs inmates how to meditate for stress reduction, anger management, and personal growth.
