New Lawyers Committee: ABA Young Lawyers Division (ABA YLD) Update

By:

As a new lawyer, countless hours are spent networking or trying to develop effective ways to market your practice and skills. One of the most effective and easiest ways to develop professional relationships is to network with your own peers and those at your level of practice. Both the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (ABAYLD) and the New Hampshire Lawyers Committee (NLC)help achieve those goals and provide unique opportunities for new lawyers.

The NLC’s Connection with the ABA YLD

As you may know, the ABA YLD is a national organization that helps provide young lawyers and young lawyer organizations with tools and opportunities for professional and personal success. The ABA YLD provides funding, leadership opportunities and hands-on assistance to its affiliates through public and member service sub-grants, national and regional conferences, bar leadership programming, and public and member service projects and scholarships.

The NLC, New Hampshire’s young lawyer division, is an affiliate of the ABA YLD. Each state has one or more appointed representatives who serve as liaisons between the affiliates and the ABA YLD. I currently serve as the ABA YLD district representative for New Hampshire and Massachusetts. I attend all meetings of the YLD Council (which includes more than 300 state and local affiliates), provide updates to the ABA YLD on affiliate events/activities, and coordinate disaster legal services with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) when a disaster hits our area.

ABA YLD Conferences

The ABA YLD participates in four conferences a year – the Midyear Meeting in February, the Spring Conference in May, the Annual Meeting in August, and the Fall Conference in October. The conferences are packed with great CLEs and a host of fun-filled events.

The Spring Conference in May will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, and I encourage anyone interested in attending to visit the YLD website for more information. See www.abanet.org/yld. If you are interested in serving as a New Hampshire delegate, please contact the New Hampshire NLC.

Other ABA YLD Opportunities

Become a Touch 10,000 Ambassador – The ABA YLD has launched a membership outreach initiative called the Touch 10,000 program and is recruiting new lawyers to become ambassadors. As an ambassador, your job would be to host a Happy Hour event for new lawyers in your area. The goal of these informal events is to welcome new lawyers to the legal profession and network. For additional information, please contact ABA YLD staffer, Tracy Kaempf at Touch10K@americanbar.org or 312-988-6235.

Nominate a colleague for the YLD Child Advocacy Award by 4/30 – Each year the ABA YLD honors one young lawyer and one non-young lawyer for dedicated service on behalf of children. Award recipients are recognized at the YLD Assembly during the ABA Annual Meeting. Click on the following link for additional information: YLD Child Advocacy Award.

Join Project Salute: Young Lawyers Serving Veterans – During the 2011-2012 bar year, the ABA YLD is extending our commitment of public service to supporting our veterans. The Division has partnered with the University of Detroit, Mercy School of Law (UDM) to implement Project Salute: Young Lawyers Serving Veterans. Through this year-long partnership, volunteer attorneys will educate veterans on available benefits and assist them with obtaining those benefits. For more information Contact Tara Blasingamem, Division Administrator, tara.blasingame@americanbar.org or Matt Potempa, Public Service Project Coordinator, matt@potempafirm.com.
