NH Bar Foundation: Award-winners, ‘Winning Team’ Celebrated

NH Bar Foundation Chair Jack Middleton said of Clare Ebel, for 30 years the head of the NH Civil Liberties Union, “her commitment to justice and our system of government transcends ideology and inspires future generations.”
The message of the baseball-themed NH Bar Foundation Annual Event, held May 14 in Concord, was that bankers and lawyers, through the IOLTA program, make for a winning team.

New Hampshire, one of the first states in the country to establish a pooled interest-earning account program for short-term or small-client trust account deposits, has seen more than $31 million in revenue allocated to charitable purposes – principally civil legal services for the underprivileged – over the past 31 years.

At the annual event, representatives of the banks that pay above-market rates for IOLTA – the nine Leadership Banks – received applause from the crowd of nearly 200 people who were in attendance.

Bar Foundation Chair Jack Middleton presented the Frank Rowe Kenison award to Clare Ebel, who recently retired after 30 years as executive director of the NH Civil Liberties Union; and the Robert Kirby award to Dan Feltes, an accomplished NH Legal Assistance lawyer under the age of 36.

Middleton also presented a “special recognition” award to Nina Gardner, who recently retired as executive director of the NH Judicial Council, for her many years of advocacy and dedication to the cause of equal access to justice.
