NH Women’s Bar Association Receives National Award
The New Hampshire Women’s Bar Association (NHWBA) was recently selected to receive the 2014 Public Service Award from the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations for its “Overcoming Cancer’s Legal Challenges” program.
The program is a collaboration of the NHWBA and the Elliot Regional Cancer Center. A support group at the Cancer Center called “Living Beyond Breast Cancer” meets on the second Wednesday of every month from 6-7:30 p.m. Many patients and survivors attending these meetings have questions about how their treatment and recovery will affect them and their families from a legal perspective.
The NHWBA met with the support group in March 2013 and intends to meet with them again this spring to provide the patients and survivors with information about their legal rights and to answer questions pertaining to employment issues, insurance and financial issues, and family law issues. In addition to providing legal guidance, the NHWBA also sought to provide emotional support for the cancer patients and survivors and their families. The NHWBA also met with the Cancer Center’s Social Work Oncology Group to help educate the social workers about the laws that affect their patients.
The 2014 Public Service Award will be presented to the NHWBA at the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations Leadership Summit to be held at Suffolk University Law School in Boston on Aug. 8.
