President's Perspective: Keeping the Bar Association Relevant

One of the things that is important to me as your president is to feel that the bar association remains relevant to you as members. While understanding that we can’t be all things to all members, we can make sure that the direction in which we are moving and the services we offer provide value for members and align with the association’s mission. Otherwise, why do it?
So, over the next year, we are implementing a strategic plan. A strategic planning group was formed to help identify stakeholders in the New Hampshire Bar Association and get their input. Many of you may have spoken to members of that planning group about what is important to you as members of the association. Over several months, personal interviews took place, a membership survey was completed and the results assessed. Then, with the assistance of the ABA Division of Bar Services, a strategic plan was developed.
As part of the plan, the bar leadership is developing criteria for reviewing various existing programs to determine whether they remain relevant and important to our members. During a daylong board orientation last month, the NHBA Board of Governors began the arduous process of prioritization. With the assistance of staff, existing programs will be evaluated by the criteria. Some programs may be eliminated, some may be given to other entities who may be better able to support them, some may be modified and others may remain unchanged.
Strategic planning is not fun, nor is it something that is simple to do. It is going to take the courage of the entire Board of Governors to assure that programs are fairly evaluated. Things cannot remain simply because they have always been that way. And if one program is eliminated, there may be other, better programs to take its place. That is the reason for the strategic plan.
NH Bar Association Strategic Plan: Mission & Goals
Mission/Vision: The NH Bar Association is a trusted leader and key partner in serving the interests of lawyers, their clients, the public and the justice system through our continuing commitment to sustaining the values of professionalism, excellence, innovation and access to justice.
Goal 1 – To support the professional competency and satisfaction of our members in service to their clients and the community.
Goal 2 – To ensure access to the fair, efficient, economical, impartial, and timely resolution of disputes.
Goal 3 – To develop mutually beneficial relationships among the law school, bench, bar, legislative and executive branches, and other stakeholders to serve the interests of justice.
Goal 4 – To support our mission/vision and implement the strategic plan in keeping with good organizational stewardship principles.
Work on the strategic planning initiative begun last year continues, with Bar Association leadership and staff identifying current and potential supporting activities and measures of success to ensure the Bar Association’s operations are focused in the right direction to fulfill the mission and goals articulated in the strategic planning process.
