In Memoriam: Betsy Miller

Betsy Miller, 61, of Bow passed away at her home Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, after a battle against cancer.

She was born in New York City in 1953 and raised in Great Neck, NY, on Long Island, where she graduated from high school in 1971. She obtained a BA in political science in 1975 from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. She graduated from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago in 1978.

After graduation, Miller served as an in-house counsel for a large insurance company managing professional malpractice liability claims.

She and her family moved to New Hampshire in 1983. She served on the board of the Bow Athletic Association and was active in Bow school activities for many years. She was a member of the Bow School Board from 1988 to 1997, during which time Bow established its own independent SAU and constructed the town’s first high school.

Miller was active in New Hampshire state and Merrimack County Republican politics.

She was employed as a researcher and committee legal counsel for the NH House of Representatives from 1991 to 1996. She served as house counsel under Speaker of the House Donna Sytek from 1996 to 2000 and under Speaker Gene Chandler from 2001 to 2004. She thereafter became a legislative and legal counselor for The Demers Group. In 2007, she became executive director of the New Hampshire Association of Counties. She also served on the board of directors of the Concord Group Insurance Companies.

Miller was an ardent golfer and was a member of the Concord Country Club for 25 years.

She is survived by her husband, Douglas Miller, of Bow; her two sons, sister, nephews and an extended family in Indiana, Washington and Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

In memory of our colleague Betsy Miller, the NHBA Board of Governors has contributed to the NH Bar Foundation.

Supreme Court Rule 42(9) requires all NH admitted attorneys to notify the Bar Association of any address change, home or office.
