Over the past year, the NH Bar Association Pro Bono Referral Program has managed a caseload of 1,423 clients, whose cases the program has referred to volunteer attorneys, including 137 hundred foreclosure cases. During the same period, 3,285 low-income New Hampshire residents have benefited from free legal services delivered through the program.

Compared to similar programs across the country, the NHBA Pro Bono Referral Program has consistently had one of the highest participation rates among bar members, and its Domestic Violence Emergency (DOVE) Project has been held up as a national model for assisting victims.

Despite these successes, we know that more than 90 percent of civil legal needs in New Hampshire go unmet each year, resulting in great socioeconomic losses to both individuals and the state as a whole.

Since 2012, New Hampshire’s governor has proclaimed the entire month of October to be Pro Bono Month here in the Granite State. The goal of this month-long focus on pro bono service is to raise awareness about the unmet civil legal needs of the state’s low-income residents, while at the same time highlighting the good work of so many New Hampshire attorneys who regularly accept pro bono clients and help them achieve satisfactory outcomes in their cases.

There are many ways to get involved with the Pro Bono program and Pro Bono Month. Take a case or provide unbundled services to low-income clients. Sign up for the Justice for All Challenge to help the NHBA document lawyers’ service, or participate in one of the many Pro Bono Month activities planned in October.
