In Memoriam: Hon. Michael F. Sullivan
Hon. Michael F. Sullivan of Portsmouth died Oct. 31, 2014. He was 69.
After graduating from University of Massachusetts in 1967, Sullivan served as a captain in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. He graduated from Suffolk Law School in 1974. He began his legal career as senior legislative attorney to the NH House of Representatives, then became general counsel to House Committees before the late Governor Hugh Gallen appointed him to serve as executive director of the NH Crime Commission. In 1981, Sullivan was appointed as associate justice for the Concord District Court in Concord, where he served until his retirement in 2008.
Sullivan served on the District Court Juvenile Justice Committee, which began the work culminating in the creation of the Judicial Branch Family Division; the District Court Domestic Violence Committee, which created the first statewide protocol for the handling of domestic violence cases in the country; and the NH District Court Board of Governors. After his retirement, he continued to serve on the bench in senior active status, sitting primarily in the 10th Circuit District and Family Division in Salem.
In memory of our colleague Judge Sullivan, the NHBA Board of Governors has contributed to the NH Bar Foundation.
