In Memoriam: Robert A. Shaines

Robert A. “Bob” Shaines, of Rye, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014. He was 85.
A former mayor of Portsmouth and a prominent New Hampshire attorney, Shaines was a native of Newburyport, Mass. He attended Portsmouth High School and the University of New Hampshire. He graduated cum laude from Boston University School of Law and then served as an Air Force Judge Advocate General in Korea.
Shaines was a founder of the Portsmouth law firm Shaines & McEachern and the author of two books, Command Influence: A Story of Korea and the Politics of Injustice and Secrets in a Time of Peace. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal in 2010 by the president of the Republic of Korea for “Command Influence.”
In addition to his many professional accomplishments, Shaines was an avid tennis player, an equestrian, a yogi and a gourmet.
He is survived by his wife, Denise Shaines, of Rye; his daughter Stephanie Shaines and her husband Dan Wallace of Dover; his daughter Pamela Ikegami and her husband Rick Roth of Cambridge, Mass.; his brother Stuart Shaines of St. Augustine, Fla.; and his grandchildren.
In memory of attorney Robert A. Shaines, the NHBA Board of Governors has contributed to the NH Bar Foundation.
