Rancourt Receives Gender Equality Award

Marcia Brown of the GEC poses with keynote speaker Lucy Hodder, award recipient Jaye Rancourt and NHBA President Lisa Wellman-Ally after the Gender Equality Breakfast on Feb. 27 in Manchester.

Rancourt speaks with Judge Hollman, the award’s namesake, after the event.
The NH Bar Association Gender Equality Committee honored Jaye Rancourt, the bar association’s immediate past president, with the Philip Hollman Gender Equality Award at its annual Gender Equality Breakfast on Feb. 27 in Manchester.

Rancourt was praised for her work on When Love Hurts, an education program for middle and high school students about the legal aspects of relationship violence. The program has been presented to hundreds of students around the state and has received rave reviews from teachers.

Stephanie Hausman, deputy chief appellate defender at the NH Public Defender, nominated Rancourt for the award and introduced her at the well-attended breakfast event. Hausman highlighted Rancourt’s compelling and personal Bar News columns, written during her year as Bar president, as being representative of the award’s ideals.

Rancourt gave a powerful but lighthearted speech about her struggle to achieve work-life balance as a litigator, wife and mother. She thanked her colleagues at Brennan Lenehan Iacopino & Hickey for their support during her year as Bar president.

The keynote speaker was former legal counsel to the governor, Lucy Hodder, who recently joined UNH as director of the school’s new health law and policy program. Read an edited version of her remarks.
