NH Bar by the Numbers
New Hampshire Bar Association membership has grown five-fold since 1978, and nearly doubled in the last 20 years. However, the total number of Bar members, 7,545, now includes many more who are on inactive status or based outside of the state.
The percentage of members on inactive status has grown from 8 percent in 1978 to 18 percent last year. As indicated in the chart to the right, 35 percent of the full membership is based out of state, up from 45 percent in 2004.
The most striking change is the aging of the Bar, with more than half of the Bar membership over 50, and increasing numbers of members reaching retirement age. Although 24 percent of the active-status members are 61 or older, only 6 percent are under 30.
