2016 Pro Bono Awards

The Pro Bono Referral Program will present these awards at the Honors & Awards Luncheon at the Midyear Membership Meeting on March 4, 2016, in Manchester.

2016 Distinguished Pro Bono Service

William Boesch

William S. Boesch
Robinson Boesch & Sennott
Portsmouth, NH

As a stalwart and dependable volunteer for the Low Income Taxpayer Project (LITP) since its inception, Bill Boesch has logged 126 hours helping low-income residents of New Hampshire resolve their tax-related disputes with the IRS. He usually has one or two cases going at any given time and demonstrates a great deal of patience and generosity with clients in crisis. Tax clients are up against a formidable opponent in the IRS, and Boesch uses his skill and experience to help put them at ease.

Bryan Clickner

Bryan W. Clickner
Law Office of Bryan W. Clickner
Goffstown, NH

Besides being one of Pro Bono’s most dependable bankruptcy attorneys, Bryan Clickner has represented many victims of domestic violence through the DOVE Project, as well as taking on contested family law cases over the past 15-plus years. Recognizing the need to help North Country families in financial distress, he recently accepted four Chapter 7 bankruptcy referrals from Pro Bono, agreeing to help desperate seniors and families who had been waiting weeks or months for assistance.

James R. “JR” Davis
Sheldon Davis Wells Hockensmith
Keene, NH

JR Davis

For the last 15 years, Pro Bono staff and fellow colleagues have called on JR Davis to ask if he could help a family, a single parent, an elder in some matter of crisis, and he has always replied, “Yes.” He has made an important contribution in helping clients in the Monadnock region and is among the top 10 Pro Bono volunteers in Cheshire County in the number of cases he has accepted since 2000. This past year, when resources were stretched in the availability of family law attorneys to take on new family law cases, Davis accepted four new family law cases. His giving spirit has eased the burdens of many families going through difficult times.

James A. Shepard
Law Office of James A. Shepard
Concord, NH

James Shepard

“Safety” is the operative word when it comes to James Shepard. Since 2010, when he carved precious private time beyond his public sector position, Shepard has volunteered in nearly 20 Pro Bono cases, representing the needs of domestic abuse and stalking victims and taking on clients seeking awards for divorce and/or parenting rights and responsibilities. He has participated in Pro Bono referral marathons and on the NH Domestic Advisory Council, which works to improve resources for victims of abuse and identify systemic shortfalls that may compromise their safety or that of their children. Shepard also bravely joined Pro Bono staff in donning high heels to show support for the Crisis Center of Central NH at its annual fundraiser, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes.

Simpson & Mulligan
Award to Firm
Lebanon, NH

Simpson & Mulligan serves the needs of low-income clients from Grafton and Sullivan counties with compassion and a no-nonsense approach. Attorneys Aaron Simpson and James Mulligan focus on family law matters, with an emphasis on assisting domestic violence victims referred through the DOVE Project. Attorney Gary Apfel helps clients through the criminal annulment process. Kerry Brothers, office manager extraordinaire, is on the front line for the firm, handling the initial contact and preparing prospective Pro Bono clients for attorney consultations and following through with case dispositions.

2016 Pro Bono Awards RISING STARS

Elizabeth LaRochelle

Elizabeth S. LaRochelle
Law Office of Katherine J. Morneau
Nashua, NH

Over the past three years, Elizabeth LaRochelle has become an integral Pro Bono program volunteer, representing 14 indigent clients through the Pro Bono/DOVE Project and logging more than 170 volunteer hours. LaRochelle’s awareness of the dynamics of domestic abuse and implementation of a trauma-informed approach to communicate and represent victims/survivors of domestic violence has earned the respect of her clients and fostered effective collaboration with crisis center advocates in Nashua and Concord.

Lissa Mascio

Lissa Mascio
Martin Lord & Osman
Laconia, NH

Soon after being admitted to the NH Bar, Lissa Mascio began accepting cases through the NH Bar Association’s Pro Bono Program and joined the DOVE Project to assist victims of domestic violence at final restraining order hearings. She has taken on some very difficult family law matters, and is always receptive when Pro Bono staff call or email her with a request to take on another case. Mascio has participated in numerous Pro Bono referral marathons, as well as other public service projects, including We the People, When Love Hurts and the Justice for All Challenge.

Bryan Townsend

Bryan J. Townsend II
Gottesman & Hollis
Nashua, NH

Bryan Townsend joined the Pro Bono panel in 2013, around the same time he left a clerkship at the NH Supreme Court to join the Nashua firm of Gottesman & Hollis. Many personal injury attorneys might not think that they could use their expertise to help Pro Bono clients, but Townsend has proved otherwise, taking on criminal record annulments, tort defense matters, driver’s license retention hearings and helping out at clinics for veterans. He takes on matters that require an extra level of research or a different approach and has helped some clients whose situations seemed hopeless.

Supreme Court Rule 42(9) requires all NH admitted attorneys to notify the Bar Association of any address change, home or office.
