In Memoriam: Erland “Erl” Charles Leslie McLetchie
Erland Charles Leslie McLetchie died May 1, 2016. He was 66.
Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, McLetchie grew up in Laconia, with his lifelong best friend and future business partner, Jay “Guppy” Clough. McLetchie was one of the greatest backup defensive tackles in New Hampshire high school football history for the Laconia High School Sachems, state champions during his senior year.
After graduating from high school, McLetchie attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1972. He attended law school at Suffolk University Law School and then returned to New Hampshire to begin practicing law in Ossipee.
McLetchie practiced law for 40 years in New Hampshire and was well regarded by clients, colleagues, and even his adversaries. He frequently represented people that could not afford representation on a pro bono basis. He was a recipient of the NH Bar Association President’s Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service.
He is survived by his wife, three sons, three grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
In memory of our colleague, the New Hampshire Bar Association Board of Governors has made a contribution to the NH Bar Foundation.
