NH Bar Foundation: Justice Souter Presents Award

Retired US Supreme Court Associate Justice David Souter was among nearly 200 guests attending the NH Bar Foundationís Annual Dinner on Sept. 21, and he spoke on behalf of US District Court Judge Paul Barbadoro, recipient of the Frank Rowe Kenison Award.

Souterís brief remarks touched upon his encounters with the honoree, including when Barbadoro, then a judicial law clerk, attended a small meeting with Souter and other federal judges, and his impressions of Barbadoro as he rose through the ranks as an attorney for the Department of Justice and then joined the federal bench in 1992, only two years after Souter joined the US Supreme Court.

Also receiving an award was Anthony Galdieri, an associate at the Nixon Peabody law firm. Galdieri, whose nomination for the Robert E. Kirby Award, for an outstanding attorney 35 or under, was supported by a number of attorneys from his firm, as well as attorneys from other firms and judges for whom he clerked.

Preceding the presentation to Galdieri by Gordon MacDonald of Nixon Peabody, John Kacavas, the first Kirby recipient, spoke about the significance of the Kirby award on the 20th anniversary of its first presentation. Kacavas had known Kirby, a promising 35-year-old attorney whose sudden death prompted the creation of the award. Kacavas spoke with amusement about Kirbyís slight stature and genial manner which contrasted with his quick intelligence and dedication to advocacy.

The evening also included remarks by Lauren Colanto Krans and Molly Martuscello, representatives from the Bridging the Gap Coalition in Rochester. The program received a Foundation Justice Grant to support its Rochester Teen Night program.
