Bar Foundation News: Fellows Event Honors Damon, Highlights Civics

The NH Bar Foundation 2017 Fellows Justice Reception on May 10 took place at an unusual venue – the McAuliffe Shepherd Discovery Center in Concord. It included a presentation of the second Nixon Zachos Award to Claudia Damon, one of the first female partners at a major New Hampshire law firm and a long-time leader in community and education.

The event featured the induction of the following NH Bar Association members and supporters of the NH Bar Foundation as 2017 Fellows: Ellen Arnold, Hon. Carol Ann Conboy; Jeffrey Hirsch; Karen Levchuk; and Ora Schwartzberg.

Advancing the foundation’s focus on improving civics education, the reception included remarks by Milford High School teacher David Alcox and two of his students. The students testified to the the impact and value of becoming more aware as citizens as a result of Alcox’s focus on civics education in his classroom.

Alcox encouraged attorneys to consider forming relationships with local schools and offering to act as a resource for lessons in civics and government.

Teacher David Alcox yielded the speakers’ lectern to Milford High School students George Hoyt (left) and Andre Arsenault, who shared how they have been inspired by participation in discussions about government and our legal system.
