NH Bar Foundation: Richard Cohen Named Honorary Fellow
Richard Cohen, longtime executive director of the Disabilities Rights Center of NH, has been named the 2014 NH Bar Foundation Honorary Fellow, Foundation Chair Jack Middleton recently announced.
Cohen is a national leader in advocacy and policy work for individuals with disabilities, dating back to the beginning of his career when, as an attorney for NH Legal Assistance, he served as lead counsel in the class-action suit that forced the state to move services for the developmentally disabled from institutions to community-based agencies, and triggered the closing of the Laconia State School. Earlier this year, the DRC, led by Cohen, reached a settlement with the state aimed at improving community-based mental health services.
Cohen will be honored at the NH Bar Foundation Fellows Reception following the NHBA Midyear Meeting on Friday, March 7, at the Radisson Hotel/Center of New Hampshire in Manchester. Recipients of justice grants also will be recognized at the reception, as will the banks that participate in the IOLTA program.
