Chief Justice Dalianis Selected for 2017 Ricker Award

The NH Women’s Bar Association recently announced the selection of the NH Supreme Court Chief Justice Linda Stewart Dalianis as the recipient of the 2017 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award.
Named after the first woman who attempted to gain admission to the New Hampshire bar, the Ricker Award honors an outstanding woman lawyer in New Hampshire who has achieved professional excellence and paved the way to success for other women lawyers, advanced opportunities for women in the profession, and/or performed exemplary public service on behalf of women.
“Chief Justice Dalianis clearly exceeds all of these criteria,” representatives of the Women’s Bar Association said in a prepared statement.
Dalianis has been a leader in the New Hampshire bar and judiciary for the past four decades and has experienced many “firsts” in her career. She was the first woman appointed to be a marital master in the Superior Court, the first woman appointed as a judge of that court, and the first woman chief justice of that court. She was also the first woman to hold a seat on the New Hampshire Supreme Court and its first female chief justice.
“I thank Marilla Ricker for giving me the opportunity to win this award, and I thank the NH Women’s Bar Association for its willingness to offer it to me,” Dalianis said. “I am grateful that my efforts on behalf of our profession are being recognized in this way.”
Dalianis was instrumental in the creation of the Daniel Webster Scholar (DWS) Honors Program at the University of New Hampshire School of Law.
“The idea for the DWS Program originated with Chief Justice Dalianis, then a senior associate justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court,” DWS Program Director John Garvey wrote. “Throughout her career, she has served as an inspiration - not just for women - but for all lawyers. Instead of knocking down doors she has opened them - making it easier for those who follow to walk through. As one of the most respected people in the New Hampshire Bar, she has shown all of us the power of vision and tenacity.”
Throughout her career, Dalianis has received many awards and accolades, including the NHWBA’s Trailblazer Award, the NH Bar Association’s Award for Distinguished Service to the Public, and the Frank Rowe Kenison Award from the NH Bar Foundation.
“At every stage of her legal career, Justice Dalianis has stepped across ground-breaking thresholds and successfully assumed critical leadership roles,” NH Supreme Court Justice Gary Hicks wrote in support of Dalianis’s nomination. “What makes her accomplishments all the more noteworthy is that, over three decades, she has always shouldered the heavy mantle of her responsibilities with grace and humor. Justice Dalianis is known as a jurist who is thoughtful, independent, and fair-minded.”
The Ricker Award will be presented to Dalianis at the NHWBA 20th Annual Fall Reception to be held at the Concord Country Club from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017. Space is limited. RSVP via the NHWBA website.
