NHMCLE Tip: NHBA Courses Are Entered Automatically

Members must ensure by July 1 that they have fulfilled NHMCLE requirements for the year using the ART system. You are responsible for entering non-NHBA CLE courses.

Please note: courses provided by or in conjunction with the NH Bar will be entered into your ART account automatically by the NHBA Registrar shortly after attendance. This includes NHBA Section meetings. If the presentation was designed for CLE credit, it will be entered for you.

If you leave a NHBA CLE early, please contact the NHBA Registrar so that your ART account can be adjusted accordingly.

Planning and Zoning 101 CLE – 5/31

This basic CLE will discuss the planning and zoning process from beginning to end. Topics include the role of the code enforcement officer; the functions of the zoning board of adjustment; violations, appeals and relief available to applicants; and subdivision and site plan reviews.

DOVE Project Seminar – 6/13

The NH Bar Association’s Domestic Violence Emergency (DOVE) Project is hosting a seminar on Tuesday, June 13 from 9-4, at the NH Bar Center in Concord, to prepare attorneys to represent victims of stalking, whether the accused is an intimate partner or not. Register online.

National expert Elaina Roberts will delve into the prevalence of stalking, the tactics perpetrators use, and the debilitating impact on victims. Faculty will analyze NH and federal stalking laws and provide a case study illustrating tools to help attorneys develop compelling cases.

NHBA Seeks Nominations for Paralegal Award – 8/7

The NH Bar Association’s annual Paralegal Professionalism Award is presented to the nominee who best exhibits a high degree of professionalism: possesses an outstanding level of knowledge about his or her job; has motivation that exceeds expectations; is considered a role model for other paralegals; and promotes paralegal work as a profession. 

Nominations should be in the form of a one-page narrative and should be submitted by 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 7 to: NHBA Paralegal Award, c/o Allison Borowy, 2 Pillsbury St., Suite 300, Concord, NH 03301-3502. 

The award will be presented during the luncheon at the Paralegal Association’s Annual Meeting in September 2017. Contact Allison for more information.


Teacher Civics Workshop - 8/4

The US District Court for the District of New Hampshire and the National Constitution Center will be hosting a free, day-long teacher workshop on Friday, Aug. 4. The NH Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Rules will hold a public hearing at 12:30 p.m., Friday, June 16, at the NH Supreme Court, to consider proposed rules related to the following:

  • Superior Court Civil Rules – Defects in Filings
  • Superior Court Civil Rule 8 – Relation-Back
  • Superior Court Civil Rule 10 – Permissive Counterclaims
  • Superior Court Civil Rule 12(g) – Motions for Summary Judgement
  • Superior Court Civil Rule 17 – Appearances
  • Superior Court Civil Rule 37 – Life Expectancy Tables

ABA Guidance on Electronic Transmission of Client Info

The American Bar Association Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility has issued Formal Opinion 477 that expands guidance to lawyers on what steps to take to enhance confidentiality in the transfer of sensitive information by electronic means.

The new opinion builds upon Formal Opinion 99-413 issued in 1999 that discusses protecting the confidentiality of unencrypted email. It also ties in amendments made to ABA Model Rule 1.6 and the official Comments of Rule 1.1 adopted since 1999.

Ricker Award Nominations – 6/9

The NH Women’s Bar Association is now accepting nominations for the 2017 Marilla M. Ricker Achievement Award. The Ricker Award honors outstanding female lawyers in New Hampshire who have achieved professional excellence, and who have paved the way to success for other female lawyers, advanced opportunities for women in the profession and/or performed exemplary public service on behalf of women.

Rockingham County Bar Meeting – 6/13

The Rockingham County Bar Association will hold its annual meeting and dinner on Tuesday, June 13, at the Portsmouth Country Club, 80 Country Club Lane, in Greenland, NH. The meeting will include a buffet dinner, election of officers, and induction of new members into the Loyal Order of the Rock.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $45 per person. RSVP by June 6 to Kristina Cerniauskaite.
